But hey, they look super cute. The smallest members of the armadillo family, the pink fairy armadillos are beautifully bizarre animals. These solitary, desert-adapted animals can be found in the central regions of Argentina. The adorable creature measures less than 5 inches in length and weighs less than 120 grams. Their small stature allows them to dig through the sand with ease, earning them the nickname “sand swimmers”. And as if these animals weren’t rebellious enough, unlike other armadillos, the pink fairy’s shell isn’t attached to its body. Instead, it is connected to its body via a membrane that runs along the spinal column. Just under the shell, the armadillo has vessels that pump blood into its shell to help regulate body temperature. Its skin is so thin that blood vessels show through and give the armadillo its iconic pink color.
